What I’m Loving - August 2023

Well…this post was all prepared and supposed to go up last week…until my computer decided to install new updates and I hadn’t saved everything I typed up :( So, I’ll try to type up as much from memory as I can.

Every year, August brings one of B’s favorite events - the IMSA race at Road American IN Elkhart Lake, WI. It used to be solely a guys’ weekend, but last year I got invited and now all the wives/girlfriends/etc are welcome to join. We of course took the dogs and had a really great time. We also really lucked out with the weather, as it wasn’t nearly as hot last last year and the first night a storm rolled through that really cut the humidity. A great time was had by all and we are already looking forward to next year!

As summer is winding down and fall os on the horizon, I can’t wait for cooler evenings for bonfires, carving pumpkins, and being able to open up the windows again!

Reading:

In a very rare twist, both of my current reads are nonfiction, which doesn’t happen very often. Usually I have one fiction and one nonfiction read going - I find that is a good balance for me.
I picked up Empty Mansions after falling into a rabbit hole of the whole Gilded Age/1920s era of American history and this book tells the story of Huguette Clark, the heiress to her father’s copper mining fortune.
The other book, The French Art of Living Well, I discovered on Instagram after another influencer that I follow shared it and then I saw that Cathy Yandell was going to be in Milwaukee for a book signing this month. I wasn’t able to attend but I picked this up and am really enjoying it. The chapters are easy reads and quick, so this is my choice when I’m reading on my lunch break at work. I love learning about French life and culture so this is definitely a good book to pick up if you are into that same topic.

Listening:

I’m a longtime listener of Serial, so when they dropped season 4 this summer, I decided to use that as my commute listen for the last few weeks. Season 4 is called The Retrievals, which is about women at the fertility clinic at Yale, and how women are treated during medical procedures as well as a look at drug diversion in medicine and how it is a systemic problem, not an individual one.

Watching:

B and I are always looking for a good show to binge. With all 9 seasons of Suits on Netflix, we started watching it a few weeks ago and have been able to get all the way to season 6 by the end of the month. Some of the storylines have had me a bit confused but I love the rivalry between Harvey and Louis, Donna’s whole character, and of course I love a legal drama! It’s an easy watch but I will say, if you miss any episodes you can’t just go on, make sure you watched anything you missed because you will end up confused later, trust me.

What did you love in August? Are you sad that summer is coming to an end? Let me know in the comments!
