Satisfaction and Minimalism
Being satisfied with what you have is something that it seems like every American strives for, yet we keep wanting more and more and more. More stuff, more house, more money.
I have started to make a transition from wanting all the stuff all the time to being satisfied with what I have. It's hard when there is advertising shoved in your face at every turn - commercials on TV and the radio, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Not to mention all the emails that roll in continuously throughout the day and night.
A small thing that I started doing about a month ago that seems to have made a huge difference in the WANT feeling I get is unsubscribing from all the advertising emails I get, then marking the sender as junk so that anything else that may come through doesn't even make it to my inbox.
Everything that I've brought into my life lately I've been asking "Will this add value to my life?" There are some things that may not seem necessary (like my love of a great smelling candle or yet another book!) that I deem valuable and that I love having around. Something that I am trying to do when buying these more frivolous things is trying to support small businesses (I love Flick The Wick, Novelly Yours, Canterbury Road Co, and In The Wick of Time for candles!).
I've been loading up bags upon bags to take to Goodwill and really taking stock in how much money is needlessly spent on STUFF.
Here's to less STUFF and more EXPERIENCES in 2018!
