Race Recap: The Hills Are Alive 3 Mile CaniCross
When: March 18th, 2017
Where: KD Park, Burlington, WI
Registration: Online and in person the day of the event.
Run/Walk options and CaniCross.
They offer a SWAG buffet but participants could also order special shirts/sweatshirts ahead of time as well as donate money to the Kenosha parks department to help maintain the trails these races utilize.
This is the second CaniCross event that Arthur and I have signed up to do. The first one fell during a really rough week, both personally and professionally, so we didn't make it.
I've been reading more about CaniCross and Kenosha Running Company has brought this option to many of their running events. (I have links at the end of the post, if you're interested!)
Race day brought sunshine albeit cold weather (my phone said "20 degrees, feels like 9 degrees") so I bundled Arthur and I up, grabbed my Orange Mud VP1 and stocked it with Arthur's running essentials, and hit the road.
Running w/your dog essentials: collapsible water bowl, treats, and poop bags.
I bundled Arthur up in his RuffWear jacket and a nice hunter orange BUFF (this one happens to be the original sized one from BibRave, since he likes to represent LOL) mostly because I'm paranoid that some idiot with a gun will think he's a wild animal and shoot him.
This is Arthur's "Mom, it's lazy Saturday!"
KD Park is only about a 40 minute drive from our house, so B took the wheel while I pre-caffeinated in the car and kept my legs warm.
Once there, I met up with my friend Jen (who is training for a 50K right now). She was doing the longer distance (8-ish miles) while Arthur and I were doing the shorter distance (3-ish miles).
The CaniCross participants were allowed to start 15 minutes before the runners and walkers. When Arthur sees other dog or people running, he takes off like a bat out of hell. My watch didn't start (damn technology!) but I'm pretty sure our first mile was easily a 7:30. But then Arthur slowed down, used the bathroom, and then waddled his way through the rest of the race.
We took a little selfie break about 1.5 miles from the finish.
Since the race was on St. Patrick's Day weekend, there were tons of shamrock headbands and green bowler hats decorating the foliage along the course. There were also tons of Bondi Bands in the bushes and trees as well for participants to grab.
Selfies w/my trail sister!
I was so happy to be able to meet up with Jen for this run. She is an amazing badass ultra marathoner who is also a mom and a nurse! And she's going to run my first ultra with me in September! (Aka she's responsible for keeping me from having a nervous breakdown over the course of 31 miles.) She is currently training for a May ultra and ran a marathon this month!
Arthur passed out on the way home, before we even got out of the parking lot!
I love XC Thrillogy/Kenosha Running Company events. They are low-key, fun, and very old-school cross country meet style. Brian (the RD/owner) is super nice and engages with participants on social media before and after the race. If you are in the area, I would highly suggest checking out some of their events. The next couple aren't until summer but in July they have the a huge relay that takes place at UW-Parkside. Check out their website for more info!
