Between work, running, being the world's greatest dog mom, and trying to adult, my life is pretty hectic. I know for a fact that I don't always get all the nutrients that I need, especially before and after working out. I've been working on integrating pre- and post-workout shakes into my nutrition plan for marathon training over the past month and was super excited to try out Generation UCan. I've heard great things from many of my running friends about their products.
One of the biggest differences between UCan and other protein powders is the use of SuperStarch instead of plain sugar + carbs, which is commonly found in protein powders. SuperStarch helps to prevent a sugar crash and keeps your energy steady before, during, and after a workout.
My favorite combination for a shake is almond milk (I keep chocolate and vanilla almond milk in the house, then mix and match according to the powder I'm using), spinach, berries, and a whole banana mixed with the protein powder. I prefer my shakes to have the consistency of a milkshake, which is why I usually don't use water or ice. I love putting in frozen berries to get all my fruit servings in and spinach for iron!
I love to take shakes as meal replacements to work. Since I work overnight, eating anything heavy doesn't sit well with my stomach and makes me very uncomfortable. I've taken shakes to work every day for a whole rotation (7 shifts) and I felt full without feeling gross and was able to sleep comfortably when I got home in the morning.
Another thing I hear from a lot of people is that they don't want their protein powder to be gritty or sandy tasting and I have definitely had gross tasting protein powders in the past. I used 8-12 ounces of almond milk as recommended in the instructions and didn't notice any grittiness.
I had the chance to try both chocolate and vanilla...I have to say, chocolate is my favorite! Who needs candy when you can get your chocolate fix and nutrition in the same way!
